Offered by : Mairie de Megève Add to journal And what better place for two of the last century’s great artists to come together than Megève? One found his inspiration here, the other presented this Haute Savoy village as if it were the 21st district of Paris, and both loved being here together to unite their worlds; Jean Marais, Jean Cocteau, two names which have been written into Megève’s history which, for the occasion of the opening of its new Modern and Contemporary Arts centre, is presenting an exceptional exhibition which highlights some of the unique and personal works of the actor and artist, Jean Marais, “Jean Cocteau’s eternal star”. This inaugural exhibition of Megève’s new cultural centre invites visitors to enter into the private world of Jean Marais and rub shoulders with the artistic universe of a multi-faceted artist and creator: actor evidently, but also fashion designer, sculptor, artist, writer of children’s stories…Thus cinema, theatre, fashion, sculpture and art set the tempo for this touching exhibition through a private collection of around 500 hitherto unseen works. Jean Marais and Jean Cocteau were both very attached to Megève, where each created some unique works: Jean Marais opened an art gallery in the sixties and seventies, Jean Cocteau created the deco for the bar of the Mont-Blanc hotel, “Les Enfants Terribles”, in 1963, where we can also find a lovely piece of artwork by Jean Marais, “Le vase aux Serpents”. Through this unique exhibition Megève gives us the opportunity to enter not only into the private world of a giant of French cinema who fired the passion of generations of swashbuckling film enthusiasts, and a film industry conducive to dreams and fantasies, but also into that of an artist, writer, sculptor, a man of a thousand facets that Art has never tired of. Rarely has the secret side of this great name of French national heritage been so revealed. The “Jean Marais, Jean Cocteau’s eternal star” exhibition brings together two exceptional men, who between just the two of them will have been and will remain a true myth, but who allow themselves to be (re) discovered and take you on a timeless journey through their works, their thoughts, their writings and their personal possessions.
