Roman Milestone

The Roman milestone which you can see at the Jaillet Pass, used to mark a border between the Ceutrons and the Viennois (Allobroges). At an altitude of 1723m it, symbolizes the limits of the Roman empire, bearing witness to the romanization of Savoie.

This granite milestone, erected by the Romans in 74 AD, marks the limit between 2 Roman provinces, the Viennoise and the Alpes Grées, corresponding to the border of 2 Celtic tribes: the Ceutrons and the Allobroges. The inscription "Fines" comes from "Ad fines" meaning "At the limits" in Latin.
